Green Burial Love Living On

With the change of time, more and more people are adopting green burial by scattering cremated ashes in Gardens of Remembrance (“GoRs”) or at sea. Returning ashes to nature allows the cycle of life to continue in the most natural manner, blending into the earth and nourishing new life, as well as paying tribute to and respecting life.

The application procedures for green burial services are simple. The services are conducted in an environmentally friendly manner and are inexpensive, thus realising that ‘those who could rest in peace whilst those who stay could be at ease’. Currently, scattering of cremated ashes can take place in the 13 GoRs under the management of the FEHD and 3 designated areas in Hong Kong waters. Another GoR under construction in the Shek Mun Columbarium in Sha Tin is expected to be completed and commissioned by 2025. According to statistics, the utilisation rate of green burial has increased from 8.4% in 2014 to 18.2% in 2024, which is the highest ever. It is believed that with the promotion of various sectors of the community, green burial will become more popular.
